Why Chai Mitzvah?

by Michalee Merritt

I have always been interested in expanding my jewish spirituality and engagement. When I looked into  Chai Mitzvah it seemed like it was only for “older” people. I have always been very involved in my synagogue and JCC by taking classes and volunteering. I was still looking for something different. I ran into a staff person from Chai Mitzvah at the grocery store. We talked for a while and set up a time to meet for coffee. I was shown all the materials that Chai Mitzvah had to offer and how their new model worked. I was intrigued! I brought Chai Mitzvah to the Adult Education Committee at my synagogue. Everyone said yes!

I became the facilitator using the Jewish Journeys curriculum. We met once a month and always had a wonderful discussion. We always went over our allotted time. Learning from others and hearing about other Jewish backgrounds brought us all closer together. I formed a second group with a smaller group of younger congregants using the Mussar curriculum. We now have formed a very deep friendship and not only use Chai Mitzvah but have expanded to social events!

“We met once a month and always had a wonderful discussion.”

During this time I was so happy with Chai MItzvah that when a job opportunity came available I jumped at the opportunity. I wanted to share my love of Chai Mitzvah with everyone!  It is easy to implement at very little cost. Since I have been with Chai Mitzvah we have expanded our offerings. We have programs for Adults, Teens,  and intergenerational Grandparents & Beyond, an array of virtual classes led by Chai Mitzvah staff and Community Gatherings about special topics.

I am forever thankful for Chai Mitzvah and what it has brought to my family and friends. Click here to find out more about starting a Chai Mitzvah group.
