The Sea is Not Full

Today is Rosh Chodesh Shvat, the month that contains the original Earth Day: Tu B’Shvat. We celebrate Tu B’Shvat when most of the winter rains have passed in Israel, and the sap is beginning to rise in the trees. We celebrate the rebirth of nature. We celebrate the beauty of creation, and think about our responsibility toward each living thing.

One of my favorite texts relating to this is from Ecclesiastes:

All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full,
To the place from which the waters flow, there they return again.
Ecclesiastes 1:7-8

  • What does this quote say about the cycle of life?
  • What does it teach us about cause and effect, both in nature and in our actions?

This will be part of a meaningful discussion during Chai Mitzvah’s rosh chodesh Shvat which you can attend tomorrow, Tuesday night at 7:30 pm, or Wednesday at 12 noon ET. We’d love to hear your thoughts, so please join the discussion!

If you are not able to join us, please share your thoughts below. We love to hear from you!
