Reb Deb Marks a Milestone

By Rabbi Debra Smith

One of the most meaningful events of my adult life was becoming a bat mitzvah at the age of 47. This was a very significant milestone in my Jewish journey, which for me, culminated in becoming a rabbi at the age of 62.

I now have a wonderful opportunity to facilitate Chai Mitzvah‘s new Marking Milestones, a program whose pilot group will be made up of adult learners between the ages of approximately 70-83 who will prepare to become a Chai Mitzvah. Chai Mitzvah was originally created as a life-passage milestone. Just as one becomes a bar/bat mitzvah, one would become a Chai Mitzvah. In our tradition 70 is considered a full life, and 83 an opportunity to have a second Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

Participants in the Marking Milestones program will study together twice a month for a period of six months. This learning experience will culminate in an online celebration.

I am so honored and excited to be the teacher/facilitator for our new pilot program. It will be wonderful to help others achieve this important milestone in their adult lives. I am so delighted at the opportunity to help others have the opportunity to achieve this important milestone.  Please come and join our new program and mark the significant milestones in your life!
