(whether or not you actually wear it)
By Nina Fondiller Woldin
Tonight, Jewish people all over the world will celebrate Purim. We’ll begin by giving tzedakah, then read Megillat Esther, eat hamantaschen, dress up in costumes, make noise, and generally enjoy ourselves! But we will also be thinking seriously about the message of Purim, and expressing ourselves through what we choose to wear.
Wearing a Purim costume reminds us that “Purim’s miracles were intentionally hidden. Esther happened to be chosen. She happened to be Jewish. Achashverosh happened to choose her. We had one of our own in the palace and wow, were we lucky! Mordechai happened to hear the plot to kill the king. Haman happened to erect the gallows upon which he was eventually hanged. There is no luck or coincidence here. It’s all meant to be, directed behind the scenes by God’s guiding hand.”*
Purim reminds us that all of our clothing is in the end a costume – an important one, with many messages – but a costume nonetheless. What will you choose to wear tonight, and what will it say about you?
After the merriment of Purim is behind us, each of us can continue to carry the message forward through what Chai Mitzvah calls POP– the Power of Passion. Many of our participants are already engaged in their communities through amazing acts of kindness… did that help you decide what to wear tonight?
Will you be…
1.A powerful role model?
2. A political commentator?
3. A keeper of tradition?
4. Something really silly, to spread joy?
5. Other (please let us know in the box below!!)
