I have been thinking about Community a lot lately. Where you can find a community, how do you define community and what makes up a community?
My friends are a community.
My mah jong group is a community.
My book group is a community.
The parents of my kids sports teams are a community.
My synagogue is a community.
I found a community this past week in some different ways. I was at my son’s baseball game and I saw a group of boys all wearing kippot and tzizit. While we were not sitting together or even knew each other it was MY community.
Yesterday we went to Boston for a Boston Red Sox game. Go Red Sox! When we were going through the ticket gates there was a big group of people all wearing the city jerseys with Red Sox in Hebrew. I commented to my husband, “Look, that is so cool!
When we got to our seats there was a family behind us wearing yellow ribbons and hats that said BRING THEM HOME NOW. Just knowing that we were with others who were like us and felt the same things made me feel like I was in a community.
That is how I feel about Chai Mitzvah. It is a community for all, no matter where you come from. Please think about forming a Chai Mitzvah group in your community – even start a new community!
