I’m so Sick of Ugly

by Michalee Merritt

I’m so sick of ugly, I am not talking about physical looks.
I’m talking about ugly hearts, ugly souls and ugly actions.

The world is broken, but you already knew that.

So, here is my Jewish antidote to living with despair and hopelessness for these terrible times; To building a life of resilience and grit.

  1. Be with others – Our tradition tells us that to pray you need a minyan. That we visit the sick, invite a stranger to your table and dance with the bride and groom.  This is how we build community and deep connections. Show up and be counted.
  2. Express gratitude. Take time to express gratitude for the personal gifts and opportunities. Gratitude for what you do have, no matter how small should be a habit! Take a moment to focus on the people and memories and opportunities that you have. APPRECIATE! Through gratitude we can change our focus from ugly to hope.
  3. Resist negative talk and discouragement. In Judaism we are not measured by our wealth, titles or educational achievements. Because we exist and breath we are holy vessels made in G-d’s image. Even when we are struggling G-d believes in us.

Commit to living with resilience. To shaping your soul and your heart through these sacred acts of living. They will help you build grit and resiliency.

Let us persist in our pursuit of hope. To repair the ugliness around us.
