While Judaism emphasizes Torah learning, it also values wisdom that comes from life experience. True wisdom cannot be learned from books, it derives from “applied Torah” from our ability to truly live out Torah values in our own lives. The Mussar movement came to be in part because its founder Rabbi Israel Salanter was concerned that the yeshivot of his time were training Torah scholars who were devoid of menschlikheit, of good, decent character. He wanted Torah learning to be applied to character development so that students might become wise and compassionate, not merely learned. We will begin to apply that Torah to our own experiences.
