Judaism asks us to balance two competing ideas as we relate to the world: “I am but dust and ashes” (spoken by Avraham in Genesis when he realizes he is bargaining with God over Sodom and Gomorrah, and “The world was created for me” (a phrase from the Babylonian Talmud, Sanhedrin 37b, illustrating that we are all unique individuals, though we are formed from the same mold). We will explore how these two ideas color our responsibility towards the environment.
