BEGRUDGING ACCEPTANCE: Despite many difficulties, the first Jews in America strove to maintain congregations and keep the Jewish rituals as best they could. While many actually kept a low Jewish profile, there are stories of valiant attempts to keep Jewish life alive with scarce resources in an inhospitable environment. During the early colonial period there were laws prohibiting Jewish rights and citizenship.After the Revolutionary War, unlike the Black community, there were no official laws prohibiting Jewish citizenship. There was, however, social antisemitism which depended on where you lived and who you knew.
