Menuchat ha-Nefesh in Hebrew is literally “rest of the soul.” It is important to the cultivation of a spiritual life. In English, the word equanimity comes from its Latin counterpart, aequanimitas. Aequus means “even” and animus means “soul” or “mind.” Menuchah/rest is one of the three values of Shabbat – one of the primary Jewish spiritual practices that can aid in the acquisition of equanimity of mind and soul.
