The Hebrew word for generosity, n’divut נדיבות , derives from the root n.d.v. – נ ד ב having to do with willingness. In contemporary Hebrew, the word for a volunteer is a mitnadev מתנדב , from that same root. Therefore, unlike tzedakah which is a Jewish obligation based in justice, generosity comes from a place of an open and willing heart, going beyond the minimum that justice might require financially or emotionally. We will discuss how this applies to our daily lives.
