We will explore the middah of responsibility, which translates as achrayut in Hebrew. The root, aleph-chet-resh can be seen in two ways:. The first one comprises the word acher, meaning “other.” This connotation speaks of someone who takes into consideration the needs of others. Read another way, however, those root letters connote the word achar, meaning “after.” This type of person would anticipate the “after,” the effect of their actions, which is another form of taking responsibility. Ideally, we can embrace both meanings of the word.
